1 καὶ ἀνέλαβέν με πνεῦμα καὶ ἤγαγέν με ἐπὶ τὴν πύλην τοῦ οἴκου κυρίου τὴν κατέναντι τὴν βλέπουσαν κατὰ ἀνατολάς καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐπὶ τῶν προθύρων τῆς πύλης ὡς εἴκοσι καὶ πέντε ἄνδρες καὶ εἶδον ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν τὸν Ιεζονιαν τὸν τοῦ Εζερ καὶ Φαλτιαν τὸν τοῦ Βαναιου τοὺς ἀφηγουμένους τοῦ λαοῦ 2 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου οὗτοι οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ λογιζόμενοι μάταια καὶ βουλευόμενοι βουλὴν πονηρὰν ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ 3 οἱ λέγοντες οὐχὶ προσφάτως ᾠκοδόμηνται αἱ οἰκίαι αὕτη ἐστὶν ὁ λέβης ἡμεῖς δὲ τὰ κρέα 4 διὰ τοῦτο προφήτευσον ἐπ' αὐτούς προφήτευσον υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου 5 καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπ' ἐμὲ πνεῦμα κυρίου καὶ εἶπεν πρός με λέγε τάδε λέγει κύριος οὕτως εἴπατε οἶκος Ισραηλ καὶ τὰ διαβούλια τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν ἐγὼ ἐπίσταμαι 6 ἐπληθύνατε νεκροὺς ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ καὶ ἐνεπλήσατε τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῆς τραυματιῶν 7 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος τοὺς νεκροὺς ὑμῶν οὓς ἐπατάξατε ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς οὗτοί εἰσιν τὰ κρέα αὐτὴ δὲ ὁ λέβης ἐστίν καὶ ὑμᾶς ἐξάξω ἐκ μέσου αὐτῆς 8 ῥομφαίαν φοβεῖσθε καὶ ῥομφαίαν ἐπάξω ἐφ' ὑμᾶς λέγει κύριος 9 καὶ ἐξάξω ὑμᾶς ἐκ μέσου αὐτῆς καὶ παραδώσω ὑμᾶς εἰς χεῖρας ἀλλοτρίων καὶ ποιήσω ἐν ὑμῖν κρίματα 10 ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ πεσεῖσθε ἐπὶ τῶν ὁρίων τοῦ Ισραηλ κρινῶ ὑμᾶς καὶ ἐπιγνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐγὼ κύριος 11 αὐτὴ ὑμῖν οὐκ ἔσται εἰς λέβητα καὶ ὑμεῖς οὐ μὴ γένησθε ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς εἰς κρέα ἐπὶ τῶν ὁρίων τοῦ Ισραηλ κρινῶ ὑμᾶς 12 καὶ ἐπιγνώσεσθε διότι ἐγὼ κύριος 13 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ προφητεύειν με καὶ Φαλτιας ὁ τοῦ Βαναιου ἀπέθανεν καὶ πίπτω ἐπὶ πρόσωπόν μου καὶ ἀνεβόησα φωνῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ εἶπα οἴμμοι οἴμμοι κύριε εἰς συντέλειαν σὺ ποιεῖς τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ Ισραηλ

1 And the spirit lifted me up, and brought me into the east gate of the house of the Lord, which looks towards the rising of the sun: and behold in the entry of the gate five and twenty men: and I saw in the midst of them Jezonias the son of Azur, and Pheltias the son of Banaias, princes of the people. 2 And he said to me: Son of man, these are the men that study iniquity, and frame a wicked counsel in this city, 3 saying: Were not houses lately built? This city is the caldron, and we the flesh. 4 Therefore prophesy against them, prophesy, you son of man. 5 And the spirit of the Lord fell upon me, and said to me: Speak: Thus says the Lord: Thus have you spoken, O house of Israel, for I know the thoughts of your heart. 6 You have killed a great many in this city, and you have filled the streets thereof with the slain. 7 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Your slain, whom you have laid in the midst thereof, they are the flesh, and this is the caldron: and I will bring you forth out of the midst thereof. 8 You have feared the sword, and I will bring the sword upon you, says the Lord God. 9 And I will cast you out of the midst thereof, and I will deliver you into the hand of the enemies, and I will execute judgments upon you. 10 You shall fall by the sword: I will judge you in the borders of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 11 This shall not be as a caldron to you, and you shall not be as flesh in the midst thereof: I will judge you in the borders of Israel. 12 And you shall know that I am the Lord: because you have not walked in my commandments, and have not done my judgments, but you have done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you. 13 And it came to pass, when I prophesied, that Pheltias the son of Banaias died: and I fell down upon my face, and I cried with a loud voice: and said: Alas, alas, alas, O Lord God: will you make an end of all the remnant of Israel?

1 Et elevavit me spiritus, et introduxit me ad portam domus Domini orientalem, quæ respicit ad solis ortum : et ecce in introitu portæ viginti quinque viri : et vidi in medio eorum Jezoniam filium Azur, et Pheltiam filium Banaiæ, principes populi. 2 Dixitque ad me : Fili hominis, hi sunt viri qui cogitant iniquitatem, et tractant consilium pessimum in urbe ista, 3 dicentes : Nonne dudum ædificatæ sunt domus? hæc est lebes, nos autem carnes. 4 Idcirco vaticinare de eis, vaticinare, fili hominis. 5 Et irruit in me spiritus Domini, et dixit ad me : Loquere : Hæc dicit Dominus : Sic locuti estis, domus Israël, et cogitationes cordis vestri ego novi. 6 Plurimos occidistis in urbe hac, et implestis vias ejus interfectis. 7 Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus : Interfecti vestri, quos posuistis in medio ejus, hi sunt carnes, et hæc est lebes : et educam vos de medio ejus. 8 Gladium metuistis, et gladium inducam super vos, ait Dominus Deus. 9 Et ejiciam vos de medio ejus, daboque vos in manu hostium, et faciam in vobis judicia. 10 Gladio cadetis : in finibus Israël judicabo vos, et scietis quia ego Dominus. 11 Hæc non erit vobis in lebetem, et vos non eritis in medio ejus in carnes : in finibus Israël judicabo vos, 12 et scietis quia ego Dominus : quia in præceptis meis non ambulastis, et judicia mea non fecistis, sed juxta judicia gentium quæ in circuitu vestro sunt estis operati. 13 Et factum est cum prophetarem, Pheltias filius Banaiæ mortuus est : et cecidi in faciem meam clamans voce magna, et dixi : Heu! heu! heu! Domine Deus, consummationem tu facis reliquiarum Israël?

Were not houses lately built, etc... These men despised the predictions and threats of the prophets; who declared to them from God, that the city should be destroyed, and the inhabitants carried into captivity: and they made use of this kind of argument against the prophets, that the city, so far from being like to be destroyed, had lately been augmented by the building of new houses; from whence they further inferred, by way of a proverb, using the similitude of a cauldron, out of which the flesh is not taken, till it is thoroughly boiled, and fit to be eaten, that they should not be carried away out of their city, but there end their days in peace. In the borders of Israel... They pretended that they should die in peace in Jerusalem; God tells them it should not be so; but that they should be judged and condemned, and fall by the sword in the borders of Israel: viz., in Reblatha in the land of Emath, where all their chief men were put to death by Nabuchodonosor (2 Kings 25, and Jeremias 52:10 and 52:27. 14 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 15 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου οἱ ἀδελφοί σου καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας σου καὶ πᾶς ὁ οἶκος τοῦ Ισραηλ συντετέλεσται οἷς εἶπαν αὐτοῖς οἱ κατοικοῦντες Ιερουσαλημ μακρὰν ἀπέχετε ἀπὸ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῖν δέδοται ἡ γῆ εἰς κληρονομίαν 16 διὰ τοῦτο εἰπόν τάδε λέγει κύριος ὅτι ἀπώσομαι αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰ ἔθνη καὶ διασκορπιῶ αὐτοὺς εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτοῖς εἰς ἁγίασμα μικρὸν ἐν ταῖς χώραις οὗ ἂν εἰσέλθωσιν ἐκεῖ 17 διὰ τοῦτο εἰπόν τάδε λέγει κύριος καὶ εἰσδέξομαι αὐτοὺς ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν καὶ συνάξω αὐτοὺς ἐκ τῶν χωρῶν οὗ διέσπειρα αὐτοὺς ἐν αὐταῖς καὶ δώσω αὐτοῖς τὴν γῆν τοῦ Ισραηλ 18 καὶ εἰσελεύσονται ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐξαροῦσιν πάντα τὰ βδελύγματα αὐτῆς καὶ πάσας τὰς ἀνομίας αὐτῆς ἐξ αὐτῆς 19 καὶ δώσω αὐτοῖς καρδίαν ἑτέραν καὶ πνεῦμα καινὸν δώσω ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐκσπάσω τὴν καρδίαν τὴν λιθίνην ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτῶν καὶ δώσω αὐτοῖς καρδίαν σαρκίνην 20 ὅπως ἐν τοῖς προστάγμασίν μου πορεύωνται καὶ τὰ δικαιώματά μου φυλάσσωνται καὶ ποιῶσιν αὐτά καὶ ἔσονταί μοι εἰς λαόν καὶ ἐγὼ ἔσομαι αὐτοῖς εἰς θεόν 21 καὶ εἰς τὴν καρδίαν τῶν βδελυγμάτων αὐτῶν καὶ τῶν ἀνομιῶν αὐτῶν ὡς ἡ καρδία αὐτῶν ἐπορεύετο τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν εἰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν δέδωκα λέγει κύριος 22 καὶ ἐξῆραν τὰ χερουβιν τὰς πτέρυγας αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ τροχοὶ ἐχόμενοι αὐτῶν καὶ ἡ δόξα θεοῦ Ισραηλ ἐπ' αὐτὰ ὑπεράνω αὐτῶν 23 καὶ ἀνέβη ἡ δόξα κυρίου ἐκ μέσης τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἔστη ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους ὃ ἦν ἀπέναντι τῆς πόλεως 24 καὶ ἀνέλαβέν με πνεῦμα καὶ ἤγαγέν με εἰς γῆν Χαλδαίων εἰς τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν ἐν ὁράσει ἐν πνεύματι θεοῦ καὶ ἀνέβην ἀπὸ τῆς ὁράσεως ἧς εἶδον 25 καὶ ἐλάλησα πρὸς τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν πάντας τοὺς λόγους τοῦ κυρίου οὓς ἔδειξέν μοι

14 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 15 Son of man, your brethren, your brethren, your kinsmen, and all the house of Israel, all they to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said: Get far from the Lord, the land is given in possession to us. 16 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because I have removed them far off among the Gentiles, and because I have scattered them among the countries: I will be to them a little sanctuary in the countries whither they have come. 17 Therefore speak to them: Thus says the Lord God: I will gather you from among the peoples, and assemble you out of the countries wherein you are scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel. 18 And they shall go in thither, and shall take away all the scandals, and all the abominations thereof from thence. 19 And I will give them one heart, and will put a new spirit in their bowels: and I will take away the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh: 20 That they may walk in my commandments, and keep my judgments, and do them: and that they may be my people, and I may be their God. 21 But as for them whose heart walks after their scandals and abominations, I will lay their way upon their head, says the Lord God. 22 And the cherubims lifted up their wings, and the wheels with them: and the glory of the God of Israel was over them. 23 And the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city, and stood over the mount that is on the east side of the city. 24 And the spirit lifted me up, and brought me into Chaldea, to them of the captivity, in vision, by the spirit of God: and the vision which I had seen was taken up from me. 25 And I spoke to them of the captivity all the words of the Lord, which he had shown me.

14 Et factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens: 15 Fili hominis, fratres tui, fratres tui, viri propinqui tui, et omnis domus Israël, universi quibus dixerunt habitatores Jerusalem : Longe recedite a Domino : nobis data est terra in possessionem. 16 Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus : Quia longe feci eos in gentibus, et quia dispersi eos in terris : ero eis in sanctificationem modicam in terris ad quas venerunt. 17 Propterea loquere : Hæc dicit Dominus Deus : Congregabo vos de populis, et adunabo de terris in quibus dispersi estis, daboque vobis humum Israël. 18 Et ingredientur illuc, et auferent omnes offensiones, cunctasque abominationes ejus de illa. 19 Et dabo eis cor unum, et spiritum novum tribuam in visceribus eorum : et auferam cor lapideum de carne eorum, et dabo eis cor carneum, 20 ut in præceptis meis ambulent, et judicia mea custodiant, faciantque ea, et sint mihi in populum, et ego sim eis in Deum. 21 Quorum cor post offendicula et abominationes suas ambulat, horum viam in capite suo ponam, dicit Dominus Deus. 22 Et elevaverunt cherubim alas suas, et rotæ cum eis, et gloria Dei Israël erat super ea: 23 et ascendit gloria Domini de medio civitatis, stetitque super montem qui est ad orientem urbis. 24 Et spiritus levavit me, adduxitque in Chaldæam ad transmigrationem, in visione, in spiritu Dei : et sublata est a me visio quam videram. 25 Et locutus sum ad transmigrationem omnia verba Domini quæ ostenderat mihi.

Thy brethren, etc... He speaks of them that had been carried away captives before; who were despised by them that remained in Jerusalem: but as the prophet here declares to them from God, should be in a more happy condition than they, and after some time return from their captivity.
