1 καὶ ἐπορεύθη Αβιμελεχ υἱὸς Ιεροβααλ εἰς Σικιμα πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ πρὸς πᾶσαν τὴν συγγένειαν τοῦ οἴκου τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ λέγων 2 λαλήσατε δὴ ἐν ὠσὶν τῶν ἀνδρῶν Σικιμων ποῖον βέλτιόν ἐστιν τὸ ἄρχειν ὑμῶν ἑβδομήκοντα ἄνδρας πάντας υἱοὺς Ιεροβααλ ἢ κυριεύειν ὑμῶν ἄνδρα ἕνα καὶ μνήσθητε ὅτι σὰρξ ὑμῶν καὶ ὀστοῦν ὑμῶν ἐγώ εἰμι 3 καὶ ἐλάλησαν περὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν πάντων τῶν ἀνδρῶν Σικιμων πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους καὶ ἔκλινεν καρδία αὐτῶν ὀπίσω Αβιμελεχ ὅτι εἶπαν ἀδελφὸς ἡμῶν ἐστιν 4 καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ ἑβδομήκοντα ἀργυρίου ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου Βααλ διαθήκης καὶ ἐμισθώσατο ἐν αὐτοῖς Αβιμελεχ ἄνδρας κενοὺς καὶ θαμβουμένους καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ 5 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ εἰς Εφραθα καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ υἱοὺς Ιεροβααλ ἑβδομήκοντα ἄνδρας ἐπὶ λίθον ἕνα καὶ ἀπελείφθη Ιωαθαμ υἱὸς Ιεροβααλ ὁ νεώτερος ὅτι ἐκρύβη

1 And Abimelech, the son of Jerobaal, went to Sichem, to his mother's brethren, and spoke to them, and to all the kindred of his mother's father, saying: 2 Speak to all the men of Sichem: whether is better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerobaal, should rule over you, or that one man should rule over you? And withal, consider that I am your bone, and your flesh. 3 And his mother's brethren spoke of him to all the men of Sichem, all these words, and they inclined their hearts after Abimelech, saying: He is our brother: 4 And they gave him seventy weight of silver out of the temple of Baalberith: wherewith he hired to himself men that were needy, and vagabonds, and they followed him. 5 And he came to his father's house in Ephra, and slew his brethren, the sons of Jerobaal, seventy men, upon one stone: and there remained only Joatham, the youngest son of Jerobaal, who was hidden.

1 Abiit autem Abimelech filius Jerobaal in Sichem ad fratres matris suæ, et locutus est ad eos, et ad omnem cognationem domus patris matris suæ, dicens: 2 Loquimini ad omnes viros Sichem : Quid vobis est melius, ut dominentur vestri septuaginta viri omnes filii Jerobaal, an ut dominetur unus vir? simulque considerate quod os vestrum et caro vestra sum. 3 Locutique sunt fratres matris ejus de eo ad omnes viros Sichem universos sermones istos, et inclinaverunt cor eorum post Abimelech, dicentes : Frater noster est. 4 Dederuntque illi septuaginta pondo argenti de fano Baalberit. Qui conduxit sibi ex eo viros inopes et vagos, secutique sunt eum. 5 Et venit in domum patris sui in Ephra, et occidit fratres suos filios Jerobaal, septuaginta viros super lapidem unum : remansitque Joatham filius Jerobaal minimus, et absconditus est.

Baalberith... That is, Baal of the covenant, so called from the covenant they had made with Baal, Joshua 8:33.

6 καὶ συνήχθησαν πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες Σικιμων καὶ πᾶς ὁ οἶκος Μααλλων καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν καὶ ἐβασίλευσαν τὸν Αβιμελεχ εἰς βασιλέα πρὸς τῇ βαλάνῳ τῆς στάσεως ἐν Σικιμοις 7 καὶ ἀνήγγειλαν τῷ Ιωαθαμ καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ ἔστη ἐπὶ τῆς κορυφῆς τοῦ ὄρους Γαριζιν καὶ ἐπῆρεν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἀκούσατέ μου ἄνδρες Σικιμων καὶ ἀκούσαι ὑμῶν ὁ θεός 8 πορευόμενα ἐπορεύθησαν τὰ ξύλα τοῦ χρῖσαι ἑαυτοῖς βασιλέα καὶ εἶπον τῇ ἐλαίᾳ βασίλευσον ἐφ' ἡμῶν 9 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἡ ἐλαία ἀφεῖσα τὴν πιότητά μου ἣν ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐδόξασεν ὁ θεὸς καὶ ἄνθρωποι πορευθῶ ἄρχειν τῶν ξύλων 10 καὶ εἶπαν τὰ ξύλα τῇ συκῇ δεῦρο βασίλευσον ἐφ' ἡμῶν 11 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἡ συκῆ ἀφεῖσα τὴν γλυκύτητά μου καὶ τὸ γένημά μου τὸ ἀγαθὸν πορευθῶ ἄρχειν ἐπὶ ξύλων 12 καὶ εἶπαν τὰ ξύλα τῇ ἀμπέλῳ δεῦρο βασίλευσον ἐφ' ἡμῶν 13 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἡ ἄμπελος ἀφεῖσα τὸν οἶνόν μου τὴν εὐφροσύνην τὴν παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τῶν ἀνθρώπων πορευθῶ ἄρχειν ξύλων 14 καὶ εἶπαν τὰ ξύλα πρὸς τὴν ῥάμνον δεῦρο σὺ βασίλευσον ἐφ' ἡμῶν 15 καὶ εἶπεν ἡ ῥάμνος πρὸς τὰ ξύλα εἰ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ ὑμεῖς χρίετέ με εἰς βασιλέα ἐφ' ὑμῶν δεῦτε πεποίθατε ἐν τῇ σκέπῃ μου καὶ εἰ μή ἐξέλθοι πῦρ ἐκ τῆς ῥάμνου καὶ καταφάγοι τὰς κέδρους τοῦ Λιβάνου 16 καὶ νῦν εἰ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ ἐν τελειότητι ἐποιήσατε καὶ ἐβασιλεύσατε τὸν Αβιμελεχ καὶ εἰ καλῶς ἐποιήσατε μετὰ Ιεροβααλ καὶ μετὰ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰ κατὰ τὸ ἀνταπόδομα τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐποιήσατε αὐτῷ 17 ὡς ἐπολέμησεν ὁ πατήρ μου ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν καὶ ἔρριψεν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐξ ἐναντίας καὶ ἐξείλατο ὑμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς Μαδιαμ 18 καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐπανέστητε ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός μου σήμερον καὶ ἀπεκτείνατε τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ἑβδομήκοντα ἄνδρας ἐπὶ λίθον ἕνα καὶ ἐβασιλεύσατε τὸν Αβιμελεχ υἱὸν τῆς παιδίσκης αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἄνδρας Σικιμων ὅτι ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν ἐστιν 19 καὶ εἰ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ τελειότητι ἐποιήσατε μετὰ Ιεροβααλ καὶ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ εὐλογηθείητε ὑμεῖς καὶ εὐφρανθείητε ἐν Αβιμελεχ καὶ εὐφρανθείη καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν ὑμῖν 20 καὶ εἰ μή ἐξέλθοι πῦρ ἐξ Αβιμελεχ καὶ καταφάγοι τοὺς ἄνδρας Σικιμων καὶ τὸν οἶκον Μααλλων καὶ εἰ μή ἐξέλθοι πῦρ ἀπὸ ἀνδρῶν Σικιμων καὶ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου Μααλλων καὶ καταφάγοι τὸν Αβιμελεχ 21 καὶ ἀπέδρα Ιωαθαμ καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἐν ὁδῷ καὶ ἔφυγεν εἰς Ραρα καὶ κατῴκησεν ἐκεῖ ἀπὸ προσώπου Αβιμελεχ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ

6 And all the men of Sichem were gathered together, and all the families of the city of Mello: and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak that stood in Sichem. 7 This being told to Joatham, he went, and stood on the top of Mount Garizim: and lifting up his voice, he cried, and said: Hear me, you men of Sichem, so may God hear you. 8 The trees went to anoint a king over them: and they said to the olive tree: Reign over us. 9 And it answered: Can I leave my fatness, which both gods and men make use of, to come to be promoted among the trees? 10 And the trees said to the fig tree: Come and reign over us. 11 And it answered them: Can I leave my sweetness, and my delicious fruits, and go to be promoted among the other trees? 12 And the trees said to the vine: Come and reign over us. 13 And it answered them: Can I forsake my wine, that cheers God and men, and be promoted among the other trees? 14 And all the trees said to the bramble: Come and reign over us. 15 And it answered them: If, indeed, you mean to make me king, come and rest under my shadow: but if you mean it not, let fire come out from the bramble, and devour the cedars of Libanus. 16 Now, therefore, if you have done well, and without sin, in appointing Abimelech king over you, and have dealt well with Jerobaal, and with his house, and have made a suitable return for the benefits of him who fought for you, 17 and exposed his life to dangers, to deliver you from the hand of Madian, 18 and you are now risen up against my father's house, and have killed his sons, seventy men, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his handmaid, king over the inhabitants of Sichem, because he is your brother: 19 If therefore you have dealt well, and without fault, with Jerobaal and his house, rejoice this day, in Abimelech, and may he rejoice in you. 20 But if unjustly: let fire come out from him, and consume the inhabitants of Sichem, and the town of Mello: and let fire come out from the men of Sichem and from the town of Mello, and devour Abimelech. 21 And when he had said thus, he fled, and went into Bera: and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech, his brother.

6 Congregati sunt autem omnes viri Sichem, et universæ familiæ urbis Mello : abieruntque et constituerunt regem Abimelech, juxta quercum quæ stabat in Sichem. 7 Quod cum nuntiatum esset Joatham, ivit, et stetit in vertice montis Garizim : elevataque voce, clamavit, et dixit : Audite me, viri Sichem; ita audiat vos Deus. 8 Ierunt ligna, ut ungerent super se regem : dixeruntque olivæ : Impera nobis. 9 Quæ respondit : Numquid possum deserere pinguedinem meam, qua et dii utuntur et homines, et venire ut inter ligna promovear? 10 Dixeruntque ligna ad arborem ficum : Veni, et super nos regnum accipe. 11 Quæ respondit eis : Numquid possum deserere dulcedinem meam, fructusque suavissimos, et ire ut inter cetera ligna promovear? 12 Locutaque sunt ligna ad vitem : Veni, et impera nobis. 13 Quæ respondit eis : Numquid possum deserere vinum meum, quod lætificat Deum et homines, et inter ligna cetera promoveri? 14 Dixeruntque omnia ligna ad rhamnum : Veni, et impera super nos. 15 Quæ respondit eis : Si vere me regem vobis constituitis, venite, et sub umbra mea requiescite : si autem non vultis, egrediatur ignis de rhamno, et devoret cedros Libani. 16 Nunc igitur, si recte et absque peccato constituistis super vos regem Abimelech, et bene egistis cum Jerobaal, et cum domo ejus, et reddidistis vicem beneficiis ejus, qui pugnavit pro vobis, 17 et animam suam dedit periculis, ut erueret vos de manu Madian, 18 qui nunc surrexistis contra domum patris mei, et interfecistis filios ejus septuaginta viros super unum lapidem, et constituistis regem Abimelech filium ancillæ ejus super habitatores Sichem, eo quod frater vester sit: 19 si ergo recte et absque vitio egistis cum Jerobaal et domo ejus, hodie lætamini in Abimelech, et ille lætetur in vobis. 20 Sin autem perverse : egrediatur ignis ex eo, et consumat habitatores Sichem, et oppidum Mello : egrediaturque ignis de viris Sichem, et de oppido Mello, et devoret Abimelech. 21 Quæ cum dixisset, fugit, et abiit in Bera : habitavitque ibi ob metum Abimelech fratris sui.

Both gods and men make use of... The olive tree is introduced, speaking in this manner, because oil was used both in the worship of the true God, and in that of the false gods, whom the Sichemites served.
Cheers God and men... Wine is here represented as agreeable to God, because he had appointed it to be offered up with his sacrifices. But we are not obliged to take these words, spoken by the trees, in Joatham's parable, according to the strict literal sense: but only in a sense accommodated to the design of the parable expressed in the conclusion of it.

22 καὶ ἦρξεν Αβιμελεχ ἐπὶ Ισραηλ τρία ἔτη 23 καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς πνεῦμα πονηρὸν ἀνὰ μέσον Αβιμελεχ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ἀνδρῶν Σικιμων καὶ ἠθέτησαν οἱ ἄνδρες Σικιμων ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Αβιμελεχ 24 τοῦ ἐπαγαγεῖν τὴν ἀδικίαν τῶν ἑβδομήκοντα υἱῶν Ιεροβααλ καὶ τὸ αἷμα αὐτῶν ἐπιθεῖναι ἐπὶ Αβιμελεχ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτῶν τὸν ἀποκτείναντα αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἄνδρας Σικιμων τοὺς κατισχύσαντας τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ ὥστε ἀποκτεῖναι τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ 25 καὶ ἔθεντο αὐτῷ οἱ ἄνδρες Σικιμων ἔνεδρα ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς τῶν ὀρέων καὶ ἀνήρπαζον πάντας τοὺς διαπορευομένους ἐπ' αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Αβιμελεχ 26 καὶ ἦλθεν Γααλ υἱὸς Αβεδ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς Σικιμα καὶ ἐπεποίθησαν ἐν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄνδρες Σικιμων 27 καὶ ἦλθον εἰς ἀγρὸν καὶ ἐτρύγησαν τοὺς ἀμπελῶνας αὐτῶν καὶ κατεπάτουν καὶ ἐποίησαν χοροὺς καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς οἶκον θεοῦ αὐτῶν καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον καὶ κατηρῶντο τὸν Αβιμελεχ 28 καὶ εἶπεν Γααλ υἱὸς Αβεδ τί ἐστιν Αβιμελεχ καὶ τίς ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς Συχεμ ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ οὐχ οὗτος υἱὸς Ιεροβααλ καὶ Ζεβουλ ἐπίσκοπος αὐτοῦ δοῦλος αὐτοῦ σὺν τοῖς ἀνδράσιν Εμμωρ πατρὸς Συχεμ καὶ τί ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ ἡμεῖς 29 καὶ τίς δῴη τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον ἐν χειρί μου καὶ μεταστήσω τὸν Αβιμελεχ καὶ ἐρῶ τῷ Αβιμελεχ πλήθυνον τὴν δύναμίν σου καὶ ἔξελθε 30 καὶ ἤκουσεν Ζεβουλ ὁ ἄρχων τῆς πόλεως τοὺς λόγους Γααλ υἱοῦ Αβεδ καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ 31 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἀγγέλους πρὸς Αβιμελεχ μετὰ δώρων λέγων ἰδοὺ Γααλ υἱὸς Αβεδ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ παραγεγόνασιν εἰς Σικιμα καὶ οἵδε πολιορκοῦσιν τὴν πόλιν ἐπὶ σέ 32 καὶ νῦν ἀνάστηθι νυκτὸς σὺ καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετὰ σοῦ καὶ ἐνέδρευσον ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ 33 καὶ ἔσται τὸ πρωὶ ἅμα τῷ ἀνατεῖλαι τὸν ἥλιον καὶ ὀρθρίσεις καὶ ἐκτενεῖς ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ' αὐτοῦ ἐκπορεύονται πρὸς σέ καὶ ποιήσεις αὐτῷ καθάπερ ἐὰν εὕρῃ ἡ χείρ σου

22 So Abimelech reigned over Israel three years. 23 And the Lord sent a very evil spirit between Abimelech and the inhabitants of Sichem; who began to detest him, 24 and to lay the crime of the murder of the seventy sons of Jerobaal, and the shedding of their blood, upon Abimelech, their brother, and upon the rest of the princes of the Sichemites, who aided him. 25 And they set an ambush against him on the top of the mountains: and while they waited for his coming, they committed robberies, taking spoils of all that passed by: and it was told Abimelech. 26 And Gaal, the son of Obed, came with his brethren, and went over to Sichem. And the inhabitants of Sichem, taking courage at his coming, 27 went out into the fields, wasting the vineyards, and treading down the grapes: and singing and dancing, they went into the temple of their god, and in their banquets and cups they cursed Abimelech. 28 And Gaal, the son of Obed, cried: Who is Abimelech, and what is Sichem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerobaal, and has made Zebul, his servant, ruler over the men of Emor, the father of Sichem? Why then shall we serve him? 29 Would to God that some man would put this people under my hand, that I might remove Abimelech out of the way. And it was said to Abimelech: Gather together the multitude of an army, and come. 30 For Zebul, the ruler of the city, hearing the words of Gaal, the son of Obed, was very angry, 31 and sent messengers privately to Abimelech, saying: Behold, Gaal, the son of Obed, has come into Sichem with his brethren, and endeavours to set the city against you. 32 Arise, therefore, in the night, with the people that is with you, and lie hid in the field: 33 And betimes in the morning, at sun rising, set upon the city, and when he shall come out against you, with his people, do to him what you shall be able.

22 Regnavit itaque Abimelech super Israël tribus annis. 23 Misitque Dominus spiritum pessimum inter Abimelech et habitatores Sichem : qui cœperunt eum detestari, 24 et scelus interfectionis septuaginta filiorum Jerobaal, et effusionem sanguinis eorum conferre in Abimelech fratrem suum, et in ceteros Sichimorum principes, qui eum adjuverant. 25 Posueruntque insidias adversus eum in summitate montium : et dum illius præstolabantur adventum, exercebant latrocinia, agentes prædas de prætereuntibus : nuntiatumque est Abimelech. 26 Venit autem Gaal filius Obed cum fratribus suis, et transivit in Sichimam. Ad cujus adventum erecti habitatores Sichem, 27 egressi sunt in agros, vastantes vineas, uvasque calcantes : et factis cantantium choris, ingressi sunt fanum dei sui, et inter epulas et pocula maledicebant Abimelech, 28 clamante Gaal filio Obed : Quis est Abimelech, et quæ est Sichem, ut serviamus ei? numquid non est filius Jerobaal, et constituit principem Zebul servum suum super viros Emor patris Sichem? cur ergo serviemus ei? 29 utinam daret aliquis populum istum sub manu mea, ut auferrem de medio Abimelech. Dictumque est Abimelech : Congrega exercitus multitudinem, et veni. 30 Zebul enim princeps civitatis, auditis sermonibus Gaal filii Obed, iratus est valde, 31 et misit clam ad Abimelech nuntios, dicens : Ecce Gaal filius Obed venit in Sichimam cum fratribus suis, et oppugnat adversum te civitatem. 32 Surge itaque nocte cum populo qui tecum est, et latita in agro: 33 et primo mane, oriente sole, irrue super civitatem. Illo autem egrediente adversum te cum populo suo, fac ei quod potueris.

34 καὶ ἀνέστη Αβιμελεχ καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ' αὐτοῦ νυκτὸς καὶ ἐνήδρευσαν ἐπὶ Σικιμα τέσσαρας ἀρχάς 35 καὶ ἐγένετο πρωὶ καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Γααλ υἱὸς Αβεδ καὶ ἔστη πρὸς τῇ θύρᾳ τῆς πύλης τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἀνέστη Αβιμελεχ καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ' αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῶν ἐνέδρων 36 καὶ εἶδεν Γααλ υἱὸς Αβεδ τὸν λαὸν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ζεβουλ ἰδοὺ λαὸς καταβαίνων ἀπὸ τῶν κορυφῶν τῶν ὀρέων καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ζεβουλ τὴν σκιὰν τῶν ὀρέων σὺ ὁρᾶς ὡς ἄνδρας 37 καὶ προσέθετο ἔτι Γααλ τοῦ λαλῆσαι καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ λαὸς καταβαίνων κατὰ θάλασσαν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἐχόμενα τοῦ ὀμφαλοῦ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἀρχὴ μία παραγίνεται ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ δρυὸς ἀποβλεπόντων 38 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ζεβουλ ποῦ ἐστιν νῦν τὸ στόμα σου τὸ λέγον τίς ἐστιν Αβιμελεχ ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἰδοὺ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ λαός ὃν ἐξουδένωσας ἔξελθε νῦν καὶ πολέμει πρὸς αὐτόν 39 καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Γααλ ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν ἀνδρῶν Σικιμων καὶ ἐπολέμησεν ἐν Αβιμελεχ 40 καὶ κατεδίωξεν αὐτὸν Αβιμελεχ καὶ ἔφυγεν ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔπεσον τραυματίαι πολλοὶ ἕως θυρῶν τῆς πόλεως 41 καὶ ἐκάθισεν Αβιμελεχ ἐν Αριμα καὶ ἐξέβαλεν Ζεβουλ τὸν Γααλ καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ τοῦ μὴ οἰκεῖν ἐν Σικιμοις 42 καὶ ἐγενήθη τῇ ἐπαύριον καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ λαὸς εἰς τὸ πεδίον καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Αβιμελεχ 43 καὶ παρέλαβεν τὸν λαὸν καὶ διεῖλεν αὐτὸν τρεῖς ἀρχὰς καὶ ἐνήδρευσεν ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἰδοὺ λαὸς ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἐπανέστη αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτούς 44 καὶ Αβιμελεχ καὶ αἱ ἀρχαὶ αἱ μετ' αὐτοῦ ἐξετάθησαν καὶ ἔστησαν παρὰ τὴν πύλην τῆς πόλεως καὶ αἱ δύο ἀρχαὶ ἐξεχύθησαν ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτούς 45 καὶ Αβιμελεχ ἐπολέμει ἐν τῇ πόλει ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην καὶ κατελάβοντο τὴν πόλιν καὶ τὸν λαὸν τὸν ἐν αὐτῇ ἀνεῖλεν καὶ τὴν πόλιν καθεῖλεν καὶ ἔσπειρεν αὐτὴν ἅλας

34 Abimelech, therefore, arose with all his army, by night, and laid ambushes near Sichem in four places. 35 And Gaal, the son of Obed, went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. And Abimelech rose up, and all his army with him, from the places of the ambushes. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul: Behold, a multitude comes down from the mountains. And he answered him: You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were the heads of men, and this is your mistake. 37 Again Gaal said: Behold, there comes people down from the midst of the land, and one troop comes by the way that looks towards the oak. 38 And Zebul said to him: Where is now your mouth, wherewith you said: Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? Is not this the people which you despised? Go out, and fight against him. 39 So Gaal went out, in the sight of the people of Sichem, and fought against Abimelech, 40 who chased and put him to flight, and drove him to the city: and many were slain of his people, even to the gate of the city: 41 And Abimelech sat down in Ruma: but Zebul drove Gaal, and his companions, out of the city, and would not suffer them to abide in it. 42 So the day following the people went out into the field. And it was told to Abimelech, 43 and he took his army, and divided it into three companies, and laid ambushes in the fields. And seeing that the people came out of the city, he arose, and set upon them, 44 with his own company, assaulting and besieging the city: whilst the two other companies chased the enemies that were scattered about the field. 45 And Abimelech assaulted the city all that day: and took it, and killed the inhabitants thereof, and demolished it, so that he sowed salt in it.

34 Surrexit itaque Abimelech cum omni exercitu suo nocte, et tetendit insidias juxta Sichimam in quatuor locis. 35 Egressusque est Gaal filius Obed, et stetit in introitu portæ civitatis. Surrexit autem Abimelech, et omnis exercitus cum eo, de insidiarum loco. 36 Cumque vidisset populum Gaal, dixit ad Zebul : Ecce de montibus multitudo descendit. Cui ille respondit : Umbras montium vides quasi capita hominum, et hoc errore deciperis. 37 Rursumque Gaal ait : Ecce populus de umbilico terræ descendit, et unus cuneus venit per viam quæ respicit quercum. 38 Cui dixit Zebul : Ubi est nunc os tuum, quo loquebaris : Quis est Abimelech ut serviamus ei? nonne hic populus est, quem despiciebas? egredere, et pugna contra eum. 39 Abiit ergo Gaal, spectante Sichimorum populo, et pugnavit contra Abimelech, 40 qui persecutus est eum fugientem, et in urbem compulit : cecideruntque ex parte ejus plurimi, usque ad portam civitatis. 41 Et Abimelech sedit in Ruma : Zebul autem Gaal et socios ejus expulit de urbe, nec in ea passus est commorari. 42 Sequenti ergo die, egressus est populus in campum. Quod cum nuntiatum esset Abimelech, 43 tulit exercitum suum, et divisit in tres turmas, tendens insidias in agris. Vidensque quod egrederetur populus de civitate, surrexit, et irruit in eos 44 cum cuneo suo, oppugnans et obsidens civitatem : duæ autem turmæ palantes per campum adversarios persequebantur. 45 Porro Abimelech omni die illo oppugnabat urbem : quam cepit, interfectis habitatoribus ejus, ipsaque destructa, ita ut sal in ea dispergeret.

Sowed salt... To make the ground barren, and fit for nothing.

46 καὶ ἤκουσαν πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες πύργου Σικιμων καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὀχύρωμα οἴκου τοῦ Βααλ διαθήκης 47 καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Αβιμελεχ ὅτι συνήχθησαν πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ πύργου Σικιμων 48 καὶ ἀνέβη Αβιμελεχ εἰς ὄρος Σελμων αὐτὸς καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ' αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλαβεν Αβιμελεχ ἀξίνην ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔκοψεν φορτίον ξύλων καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτὸ καὶ ἐπέθηκεν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὤμους αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν λαὸν τὸν μετ' αὐτοῦ τί εἴδετέ με ποιοῦντα ταχέως ποιήσατε ὡς καὶ ἐγώ 49 καὶ ἔκοψαν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἕκαστος φορτίον καὶ ἦραν καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ὀπίσω Αβιμελεχ καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπὶ τὸ ὀχύρωμα καὶ ἐνέπρησαν ἐπ' αὐτοὺς τὸ ὀχύρωμα ἐν πυρί καὶ ἀπέθανον πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες πύργου Σικιμων ὡσεὶ χίλιοι ἄνδρες καὶ γυναῖκες

46 And when they who dwelt in the tower of Sichem, had heard this, they went into the temple of their god Berith, where they had made a covenant with him, and from thence the place had taken its name, and it was exceeding strong. 47 Abimelech also hearing that the men of the tower of Sichem were gathered together, 48 went up into mount Selmon, he and all his people with him: and taking an axe, he cut down the bough of a tree, and laying it on his shoulder, and carrying it, he said to his companions: What you see me do, do out of hand. 49 So they cut down boughs from the trees, every man as fast as he could, and followed their leader. And surrounding the fort, they set it on fire: and so it came to pass, that with the smoke and with the fire a thousand persons were killed, men and women together, of the inhabitants of the town of Sichem.

46 Quod cum audissent qui habitabant in turre Sichimorum, ingressi sunt fanum dei sui Berith, ubi fœdus cum eo pepigerant, et ex eo locus nomen acceperat : qui erat munitus valde. 47 Abimelech quoque audiens viros turris Sichimorum pariter conglobatos, 48 ascendit in montem Selmon cum omni populo suo : et arrepta securi, præcidit arboris ramum, impositumque ferens humero, dixit ad socios : Quod me videtis facere, cito facite. 49 Igitur certatim ramos de arboribus præcidentes, sequebantur ducem. Qui circumdantes præsidium, succenderunt : atque ita factum est, ut fumo et igne mille homines necarentur, viri pariter et mulieres, habitatorum turris Sichem.

50 καὶ ἐπορεύθη Αβιμελεχ εἰς Θεβες καὶ περιεκάθισεν ἐπ' αὐτὴν καὶ προκατελάβετο αὐτήν 51 καὶ πύργος ἦν ὀχυρὸς ἐν μέσῳ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἔφυγον ἐκεῖ πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες καὶ πάντες οἱ ἡγούμενοι τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἀπέκλεισαν ἐφ' ἑαυτοὺς καὶ ἀνέβησαν ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα τοῦ πύργου 52 καὶ ἦλθεν Αβιμελεχ ἕως τοῦ πύργου καὶ ἐξεπολέμησαν αὐτόν καὶ ἤγγισεν Αβιμελεχ ἕως τῆς θύρας τοῦ πύργου ἐμπρῆσαι αὐτὸν ἐν πυρί 53 καὶ ἔρριψεν γυνὴ μία κλάσμα μύλου ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν Αβιμελεχ καὶ συνέθλασεν τὸ κρανίον αὐτοῦ 54 καὶ ἐβόησεν τὸ τάχος πρὸς τὸ παιδάριον τὸν αἴροντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ σπάσαι τὴν μάχαιράν σου καὶ θανάτωσόν με μήποτε εἴπωσιν γυνὴ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτόν καὶ ἐξεκέντησεν αὐτὸν τὸ παιδάριον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέθανεν Αβιμελεχ 55 καὶ εἶδεν ἀνὴρ Ισραηλ ὅτι ἀπέθανεν Αβιμελεχ καὶ ἀπῆλθον ἀνὴρ εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ 56 καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν ὁ θεὸς τὴν κακίαν Αβιμελεχ ἣν ἐποίησεν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ ἀποκτεῖναι τοὺς ἑβδομήκοντα ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ 57 καὶ πᾶσαν κακίαν ἀνδρῶν Σικιμων ἐπέστρεψεν ὁ θεὸς εἰς τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπῆλθεν ἐπ' αὐτοὺς ἡ κατάρα Ιωαθαμ τοῦ υἱοῦ Ιεροβααλ

50 Then Abimelech, departing from thence, came to the town of Thebes, which he surrounded and besieged with his army. 51 And there was in the midst of the city a high tower, to which both the men and the women were fled together, and all the princes of the city, and having shut and strongly barred the gate, they stood upon the battlements of the tower to defend themselves. 52 And Abimelech, coming near the tower, fought stoutly: and, approaching to the gate, endeavoured to set fire to it: 53 And behold, a certain woman casting a piece of a millstone from above, dashed it against the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull. 54 And he called hastily to his armourbearer, and said to him: Draw your sword, and kill me: lest it should be said that I was slain by a woman. He did as he was commanded, and slew him. 55 And when he was dead all the men of Israel that were with him, returned to their homes. 56 And God repaid the evil that Abimelech had done against his father, killing his seventy brethren. 57 The Sichemites also were rewarded for what they had done, and the curse of Joatham, the son of Jerobaal, came upon them.

50 Abimelech autem inde proficiscens venit ad oppidum Thebes, quod circumdans obsidebat exercitu. 51 Erat autem turris excelsa in media civitate, ad quam confugerant simul viri ac mulieres, et omnes principes civitatis, clausa firmissime janua, et super turris tectum stantes per propugnacula. 52 Accedensque Abimelech juxta turrim, pugnabat fortiter : et appropinquans ostio, ignem supponere nitebatur: 53 et ecce una mulier fragmen molæ desuper jaciens, illisit capiti Abimelech, et confregit cerebrum ejus. 54 Qui vocavit cito armigerum suum, et ait ad eum : Evagina gladium tuum, et percute me, ne forte dicatur quod a femina interfectus sim. Qui jussa perficiens, interfecit eum. 55 Illoque mortuo, omnes qui cum eo erant de Israël, reversi sunt in sedes suas: 56 et reddidit Deus malum quod fecerat Abimelech contra patrem suum, interfectis septuaginta fratribus suis. 57 Sichimitis quoque quod operati erant, retributum est, et venit super eos maledictio Joatham filii Jerobaal.
