1 εἰς τὸ τέλος τοῖς υἱοῖς Κορε ψαλμός

1 Unto the end, a psalm for the sons of Core.

2 ἀκούσατε ταῦτα πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐνωτίσασθε πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν οἰκουμένην 3 οἵ τε γηγενεῖς καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ πλούσιος καὶ πένης 4 τὸ στόμα μου λαλήσει σοφίαν καὶ ἡ μελέτη τῆς καρδίας μου σύνεσιν 5 κλινῶ εἰς παραβολὴν τὸ οὖς μου ἀνοίξω ἐν ψαλτηρίῳ τὸ πρόβλημά μου 6 ἵνα τί φοβοῦμαι ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πονηρᾷ ἡ ἀνομία τῆς πτέρνης μου κυκλώσει με 7 οἱ πεποιθότες ἐπὶ τῇ δυνάμει αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ πλήθει τοῦ πλούτου αὐτῶν καυχώμενοι 8 ἀδελφὸς οὐ λυτροῦται λυτρώσεται ἄνθρωπος οὐ δώσει τῷ θεῷ ἐξίλασμα αὐτοῦ 9 καὶ τὴν τιμὴν τῆς λυτρώσεως τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ 10 καὶ ἐκόπασεν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ ζήσεται εἰς τέλος ὅτι οὐκ ὄψεται καταφθοράν ὅταν ἴδῃ σοφοὺς ἀποθνῄσκοντας 11 ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἄφρων καὶ ἄνους ἀπολοῦνται καὶ καταλείψουσιν ἀλλοτρίοις τὸν πλοῦτον αὐτῶν 12 καὶ οἱ τάφοι αὐτῶν οἰκίαι αὐτῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα σκηνώματα αὐτῶν εἰς γενεὰν καὶ γενεάν ἐπεκαλέσαντο τὰ ὀνόματα αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τῶν γαιῶν αὐτῶν 13 καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἐν τιμῇ ὢν οὐ συνῆκεν παρασυνεβλήθη τοῖς κτήνεσιν τοῖς ἀνοήτοις καὶ ὡμοιώθη αὐτοῖς 14 αὕτη ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτῶν σκάνδαλον αὐτοῖς καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν εὐδοκήσουσιν διάψαλμα 15 ὡς πρόβατα ἐν ᾅδῃ ἔθεντο θάνατος ποιμαίνει αὐτούς καὶ κατακυριεύσουσιν αὐτῶν οἱ εὐθεῖς τὸ πρωί καὶ ἡ βοήθεια αὐτῶν παλαιωθήσεται ἐν τῷ ᾅδῃ ἐκ τῆς δόξης αὐτῶν 16 πλὴν ὁ θεὸς λυτρώσεται τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐκ χειρὸς ᾅδου ὅταν λαμβάνῃ με διάψαλμα 17 μὴ φοβοῦ ὅταν πλουτήσῃ ἄνθρωπος καὶ ὅταν πληθυνθῇ ἡ δόξα τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ 18 ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ ἀποθνῄσκειν αὐτὸν λήμψεται τὰ πάντα οὐδὲ συγκαταβήσεται αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα αὐτοῦ 19 ὅτι ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ζωῇ αὐτοῦ εὐλογηθήσεται ἐξομολογήσεταί σοι ὅταν ἀγαθύνῃς αὐτῷ 20 εἰσελεύσεται ἕως γενεᾶς πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἕως αἰῶνος οὐκ ὄψεται φῶς 21 ἄνθρωπος ἐν τιμῇ ὢν οὐ συνῆκεν παρασυνεβλήθη τοῖς κτήνεσιν τοῖς ἀνοήτοις καὶ ὡμοιώθη αὐτοῖς

2 Hear these things, all you nations: give ear, all you inhabitants of the world. 3 All you that are earthborn, and you sons of men: both rich and poor together. 4 My mouth shall speak wisdom: and the meditation of my heart understanding. 5 I will incline my ear to a parable; I will open my proposition on the psaltery. 6 Why shall I fear in the evil day? The iniquity of my heel shall encompass me. 7 They that trust in their own strength, and glory in the multitude of their riches, 8 no brother can redeem, nor shall man redeem: he shall not give to God his ransom, 9 nor the price of the redemption of his soul: and shall labour for ever, 10 and shall still live unto the end. 11 He shall not see destruction, when he shall see the wise dying: the senseless and the fool shall perish together: And they shall leave their riches to strangers: 12 And their sepulchres shall be their houses for ever. Their dwelling places to all generations: they have called their lands by their names. 13 And man when he was in honour did not understand; he is compared to senseless beasts, and has become like to them. 14 This way of theirs is a stumbling block to them: and afterwards they shall delight in their mouth. 15 They are laid in hell like sheep: death shall feed upon them. And the just shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their help shall decay in hell from their glory. 16 But God will redeem my soul from the hand of hell, when he shall receive me. 17 Be not afraid, when a man shall be made rich, and when the glory of his house shall be increased. 18 For when he shall die he shall take nothing away; nor shall his glory descend with him. 19 For in his lifetime his soul will be blessed: and he will praise you when you shall do well to him. 20 He shall go in to the generations of his fathers: and he shall never see light. 21 Man when he was in honour did not understand: he has been compared to senseless beasts, and made like to them.

2 Audite hæc, omnes gentes; auribus percipite, omnes qui habitatis orbem: 3 quique terrigenæ et filii hominum, simul in unum dives et pauper. 4 Os meum loquetur sapientiam, et meditatio cordis mei prudentiam. 5 Inclinabo in parabolam aurem meam; aperiam in psalterio propositionem meam. 6 Cur timebo in die mala? iniquitas calcanei mei circumdabit me. 7 Qui confidunt in virtute sua, et in multitudine divitiarum suarum, gloriantur. 8 Frater non redimit, redimet homo : non dabit Deo placationem suam, 9 et pretium redemptionis animæ suæ. Et laborabit in æternum; 10 et vivet adhuc in finem. 11 Non videbit interitum, cum viderit sapientes morientes : simul insipiens et stultus peribunt. Et relinquent alienis divitias suas, 12 et sepulchra eorum domus illorum in æternum; tabernacula eorum in progenie et progenie : vocaverunt nomina sua in terris suis. 13 Et homo, cum in honore esset, non intellexit. Comparatus est jumentis insipientibus, et similis factus est illis. 14 Hæc via illorum scandalum ipsis; et postea in ore suo complacebunt. 15 Sicut oves in inferno positi sunt : mors depascet eos. Et dominabuntur eorum justi in matutino; et auxilium eorum veterascet in inferno a gloria eorum. 16 Verumtamen Deus redimet animam meam de manu inferi, cum acceperit me. 17 Ne timueris cum dives factus fuerit homo, et cum multiplicata fuerit gloria domus ejus: 18 quoniam, cum interierit, non sumet omnia, neque descendet cum eo gloria ejus. 19 Quia anima ejus in vita ipsius benedicetur; confitebitur tibi cum benefeceris ei. 20 Introibit usque in progenies patrum suorum; et usque in æternum non videbit lumen. 21 Homo, cum in honore esset, non intellexit. Comparatus est jumentis insipientibus, et similis factus est illis.

The iniquity of my heel... That is, the iniquity of my steps or ways: or the iniquity of my pride, with which as with the heel, I have spurned and kicked at my neighbours: or the iniquity of my heel, that is, the iniquity in which I shall be found in death. The meaning of this verse is, Why should I now indulge those passions and sinful affections, or commit now those sins, which will cause me so much fear and anguish in the evil day; when the sorrows of death shall compass me, and the perils of hell shall find me? They that trust, etc... As much as to say, let them fear that trust in their strength or riches: for they have great reason to fear: seeing no brother or other man, how much a friend soever, can by any price or labour rescue them from death. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
And shall labour for ever, etc... This seems to be a continuation of the foregoing sentence: as much as to say no man can by any price or ransom prolong his life, that so he may still continue to labour here, and live to the end of the world. Others understand it of the eternal sorrows, and dying life of hell, which is the dreadful consequence of dying in sin. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
He shall not see destruction, etc... Or, shall he not see destruction? As much as to say, however thoughtless he may be of his death, he must not expect to escape; when even the wise and the good are not exempt from dying. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
They have called, etc... That is, they have left their names on their graves, which alone remain of their lands. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
They shall delight in their mouth... Notwithstanding the wretched way in which they walk, they shall applaud themselves with their mouths, and glory in their doings. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
In the morning... That is, in the resurrection to a new life; when the just shall judge and condemn the wicked. Ibid. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
From their glory... That is, when their short-lived glory in this world shall be past, and be no more. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
